Angels Race
NORTH CAROLINA

After the Foundation established the Angels Race Virginia and witnessed the incredible impact it had on participants, Mick Gunter decided it was time to bring it to his hometown in North Carolina. The first race in 2005 introduced the same power of healing that comes from honoring our “angels” to the Winston-Salem area. Take a tour of the incredible times below.

The USAT Sanctioned Angels Race North Carolina was designed to wind through the famous Tanglewood Park, located in Clemmons, NC – about 10 minutes west of Winston-Salem. This 1,200-acre park was once part of the Reynolds estate, but now serves as a famous destination for the public with miles of trails, lakes, an Aquatic Center, and more. It proved the perfect venue for The Angels Race.

It maintained the same rigor of it’s Virginia counterpart, with a rolling terrain typical of the North Carolina foothills. Hundreds of athletes lined up with their arms out, emblazoned with the Sharpie-inscribed names of their angels. Once again, the Angels Race brought the opportunity to focus on gratitude in the midst of the grind.

It was a chilly day, but some 328 athletes braved the weather to come swim, bike, and run their hearts out for the 6th annual Angels Race North Carolina. Endurance Magazine declared the race the best sprint triathlon in the Piedmont Triad for 2011. The venue change to the Clemmons West Recreation Pool worked out great. We’re so greatful to everyone – and their angels – who came out to compete, volunteer, or just cheer.

2 years ago, I attended the Angel's Race at Tanglewood. Everyone was waiting for the last person to finish. Finally, she came into view...a lovely large-sized lady. She was running with all her heart. I cried as I always do when I see bravery. I high 5'd her as she passed by me & thought to myself, "if she can do this, so can i." This year I finally put down the cigarettes, learned to swim, bought a bike & started training. My goal? To do the Angel's Race. I don't know that lady's name but she is my earth angel.

September 19, 2010

The 2010 Angels Race NC at Tanglewood Park saw some 500 participants come out to test their triathletic metal and share their angel’s stories. To set the tone, we enjoyed live music from “Epic Failure” and “Wax Mojo.” Many thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating the angels among us!

What a beautiful event. Everything from the race site, to the organization, the volunteers and the inspiring format were truly first class and unforgettable. I raced in my brother's memory on Sunday. We used to visit Tanglewood in the 70s with my grandmother, we swam in that same pool, played on the train and ran on some of the same earth that the race covered. I did not anticipate the magnitude of emotion that I would feel. Not just for my story, but the collective stories. I never plan to miss this race again! Thank you!

A Beautiful Day In Tanglewood Park

September 14, 2008

From the first place finisher to the last triathlete to cross the line, everyone was incredibly enthusiastic and supportive every step of the way. The central premise of the Angels Race continues to be lived out at each event, as each participant wears their heart – and angel – on their sleeve. So much gratitude for everyone who came out!

I have been racing at Tanglewood since 2005.  Yesterday was the best event ever!  You guys did a great job! It was family friendly (my kids normally go to all of them with me and they said it was the best yet)!  Incredible job! Thanks for letting us and Mt. Olive Pickles be a part of it.  We really had a fun day.

This was my first triathalon, and although I have lots of room for improvement, (tried to be too nice in my swim and was dreadfully slow in transitions!) I can’t wait for next season…I am totally hooked!

“From the start, the Angels Race has undeniably had the right feel.”

September 17, 2005

After two years of overwhelming response in Lynchburg, VA, the Angels Foundation decided to bring the Angels Race to the Piedmont Triad in NC. We quickly confirmed that the Angel Principle crosses boundaries and connects regardless of where you are. The race was based in beautiful Tanglewood Park, and over 300 participants showed up to take part.

This was by far the most fun I have ever had in any race!   I truly appreciated the attention to details, particularly for our angels.
